All Consuming Consumerism

So i read an article about some students who decided to not buy anything brand new for a year. They wanted to remove themselves from the mindset of this culture... that is, we always are needing something new, we are rarely satisfied.

more than that, I believe that this has an awesome benefit for us as believers... where should our satisfaction lie? in Jesus...not in anything we can buy or things we can possess. should we be allow things and circumstances to dictate our "feelings" of satisfaction.

so here's a thought, or maybe a question... how can we begin to remove ourselves from the mindset of this culture? how can we take our consumeristic attitudes and change them into ones that are satisfied by only God?

Personally I think that not buying anything new at all is a bit extreme... I mean, what if you need a "new" (aka one not written in) notebook for school? but I get why they mean, and I think the general consept is great. I think that to get out of our worldly materialistic views, we don't nessicarily have to cut out everything new, but if you do get something new and exiting, don't let it take over ur life, and still focus mainly on God, no matter how hard it is. Either that, or learn the hard way by consuming urself with things and finding they don't satisfy. Just my thoughts.
