Sr High... our Ice Skating event is coming up in just a few short weeks, don't forget to mark it on your calendar now... You can get more details by navigating over to the EVENTS page, and clicking on the picture to the left of the event description. (or you could just click here) This will give you more details about the event, and tell you how to plan. I hope to see a bunch of you out that day!
We are looking to get 4 or 5 youth involved in the planning & programming of the Youth Ministry. I am not just talking about wednesdays, but events and even Sunday school. If you are interested in being a part of what happens here in our Students Ministry let me know, I really want to see some of you step up your involvement.
**EDIT
Many of you have asked what exactly we are asking of you, and how much time it would take. What I am thinking is that you would come and sit in on part of our Volunteer meetings, which are about every 6 weeks or so, and that we want to hear your ideas for the Student Ministry here at CMBC. We aren't looking for you to run events, or to plan things by yourselves. We are looking for input. We are looking for people to get involved in the future of our Youth Ministry. I think the time cost to you might at the least a few hours a month. It could be more depending on how involved you get.
I think a key word here for me is ownership. We want some of you guys, (if not all) to take some ownership of the Student Ministry.
So it's obvious you guys like to talk to each other. And most of the posts that have been coming through lately on the blog have gotten a lot or responses, but they are not on topic.
I am putting up a forum for you guys to chat about whatever you want to. You can find it here. You will also find a like for it on the right side of the blog, it says Forum, click on it. You will have to register a name to create threads, or leave replies. So now you have two outlets, the blog, and the forum.
I really like the passage of scripture that Pastor Reid was in yesterday morning.
Titus 3:3-7 3For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. 4But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
I've been in tis mindset lately thinking about what a fool is, and what it means to be a loser, so when in verse 3 Titus says were were once all fools ourselves, I started to pay more attention to what was coming next.
A little later in that verse we see this phrase "enslaved to various lusts and pleasures." Pastor Reid told us that the root word for enslaved is doulos, a Greek word that means bond-slave. The basic idea is this, one who gives himself up to another’s will. I know there are many texts of scripture that talk about our slavery to sin, and there are lot's of people who don't like that concept. But here, it is clear that sin is OUR choice. We submit our will to that of lust and worldly pleasures. If we weren't forced into sin, we would chose it.
Praise God that passage goes on to talk about the wonderful rescue mission God staged through Jesus by his love, mercy and grace to make us righteous. God could justly call us righteous because of Jesus substitutionary death, and now we have a have a firm hope of an eternity with Jesus.
With this awesome knowledge of who we were and what God has done, let's pray for this statement from that passage: regenerate and renew us.
The deadline for getting your applications in for this coming summers trip to Costa Rica is quickly approaching. You need to have your part of the application in along with your $100 deposit by Wednesday, January 30.
I've been thinking about this concept a lot lately. Preparing for the Sr High Winter Retreat theme (Biggest Loser) and getting our current midweek series together (Pity the Fool) have only gone to make me think deeper about acceptance in this world, and acceptance by God. How twisted have our value systems become? The stuff of life that truly matters are those things that we give so little time, attention, money, and energy to, and conversely those things that matter so little in light of eternity are what we give our all to.
Matthew 19:30 "This is the Great Reversal: many of the first ending up last, and the last first."
Those in the world who don't ever get what truly matters in life (which is that stuff that matters to God), they will have wasted their lives pursuing what will drop them in last place. But for those who see Christ as the highest prize, seeing through the distractions of the world, they are the ones who will really win. They are the ones who will end up at the front of the line.
Do you remember when you were young, and someone would say, “It’s opposite day!” Everything now becomes the opposite of what it should be. That's almost what this begins to feel like as I come to understand God’s original design for us. See, the world and everything in it is telling us to live for self, and stuff. But Jesus in his Word says that up is not really up, its down. And left and right are different too. In fact, nothing in this world is how it seems. All that we’ve been told is a lie! We’ve been playing some twisted version of spiritual opposite day and it’s gotten us all mixed up.
I love how The Message words this perspective on life in that verse in Matthew. The Great Reversal. It's opposite of everything the world says, does, and pursues. And why are we so surprised? The Bible tells us that God’s ways are not our ways. So what if we buy into this Great Reversal? The world might call us losers and fools. That's okay, let's be the biggest losers, let's be the fool, let's lose the world if it mean we get Jesus.
Whoever can come up with the best caption for this picture will win something which I haven't decided yet. Entries will be taken up till Wednesday, January 30. Make sure I know who you are when you post your entry.
So camp has been over for more than a day now... and it really was a blast. I hope you all had as much fun as I did. And I also hope that being a loser will be something you want to be, and well... don't want to be at the same time. You know what I mean. Anyway... can't wait to see all of you on wednesday, game night at linville. The good times never end!
