To illustrate my point, I will share with you some of the people who I had sinful attitudes against that I had to repent of.
I used to not like men with hairy ears and noses.
I used to not like men who wear pastel colors.
I used to not like canadians.
I used to not like men who wear tank-tops.
I used to not like men who wear mullets.
I used to not like men who wear white socks with dark pants.
I used to not like minivans.
I know this all sounds terrible, and it is. But I'd appreciate your being honest also and admitting that you too have your list of people whom you dislike. You probably think that your list is better than mine because it has abortion doctors, rapists, pedophiles, corporate thieves, used-car salesman, politicians, and evil dictators on it. But the fact that we each have a list means that we are all pretty much the same, and are just haggling over the details of who should wear the white hats, and who should wear the black. This also helps explain the finger-pointing both in the church and in the culture between blacks and whites, young and old, rich and poor, ugly and beautiful, smart and dumb, urban and rural, self-help and self-acceptance, victims and perpetrators, Republicans and Democrats, Chevy and Ford, Mac and PC, married and single, homosexual and heterosexual, male and female and educated and uneducated to name a few. The bottom line is that we are all self-righteous. We are all prone to secretly believe that we are somehow better than others because of things we do or do not do.
But the more we understand the concept of reformission, the more we realize that everyone is unlovely, Jesus loves everyone, and it is his love alone that makes us lovely.
46“Take to your heart all the words with which I am warning you today, which you shall command your sons to observe carefully, even all the words of this law.
47“For it is not an idle word for you; indeed it is your life. And by this word you will prolong your days in the land, which you are about to cross the Jordan to possess.”
15“See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity;
16in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, that you may live and multiply, and that the Lord your God may bless you in the land where you are entering to possess it.
17“But if your heart turns away and you will not obey, but are drawn away and worship other gods and serve them,
18I declare to you today that you shall surely perish. You will not prolong your days in the land where you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess it.
19“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants,
20by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”
So it was pretty obvious in Midweek last night that it has been a rough week for a lot of people. I can't say that I understand each situation, or that I even have the right words to say to make it seem alright.
I do however know that God wants us to see all these things through his eyes. Somehow God has purpose and plans in what is going on in each of our lives. An oft quoted verse of encouragement says,
"And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose."
God is working all these things for our benefit, and for His glory. What's the benefit in pain, hurt, and sorrow? James 1 tells us that it is for the perfection (maturity) of our faith. It is these thoughts in scripture that give perspective to our lives. When people get sick, relationships go south, and life has more questions than answers keep in mind that none of this is out of God's control. In fact we should rest assured everyday that He is in control.
So I got the site issues all fixed yesterday, and the menu at the top of the blog finally matches the rest of the site. Phew! AND... I'm now on twitter. It's like a moment-by-moment mini-blog. Go and join and let's stay in touch. www.twitter.com
There are a couple bugs I'm trying to work out with the new site... like my name being in the list of pages... not sure why it's doing that. I'm working on it. My name leads to the blog for whatever reason.
I have spent the morning working up a different design for the youth website. It is much simpler... and i think i like it. The old one is still in place, and won't be taken down till I'm fully happy with the new one. Your input is greatly appreciated. Here is the link to get to the new one. The blog doesn't work, it's there as a placeholder, so you can ignore it.
One of the things that I have been busy with is a school project. My sister Rachel is taking the same class I am (Legal & Ethical Issues in Counseling) so we decided to work on the project together. We rewrote the song "Lean on Me" and made a video. You probably won't get all of it, but here it is.
