I grew up in a church that I now believe to be pretty legalistic. Maybe not in the traditional understanding of the word, but to many degrees it was. What I mean by legalistic is that it held to a strict letter of the law approach to Christianity. There where very clear cut lines drawn all over the sand that we were never to cross, or even approach for fear of hell and damnation. As I have been pondering my upbringing the past few years (basically since Judah came into existence) I have been wondering about the kinds of things that my sisters, Sarah and I were taught in our church and youth group. I am firmly convinced that we were being told to live by a set of rules that didn't allow us or even teach us how to interact with the world in a way that displayed Jesus to them. Sarah and I were talking recently about an incident that is characteristic of our upbringing. Our church's sign was one that you could put messages on, and here is what it said one week. It was up for like one day and someone came along and smashed it (for good reason). Here's my problem, how can we expect an unregenerate world to change their sin issues apart from the work of the Holy Spirits renewing power in their lives? It's not that this statement isn't true, it's very true. God hates our sin. But that's not even how Jesus did it. Jesus showed love and provided healing along with his message of repentance. How are we interacting with the world around us? Is religion preventing you from impacting people you come into contact with? If so, YOUR DOING IT WRONG. Our relationship should drive us to people who need Jesus, not away from them. Our relationship with Jesus should attract those who need Jesus, not drive them away. I am still processing through all the implications of this and how I still need to change my thinking on this. I hope we all pray that we begin to love the world and others the way Jesus loves them.
So I'm sure we are all having the same kind of summer. Crazy. It seems like I'll only ever be around every other week or so. It's hard to keep your head in the game when you're in and out of things so often.
It's also easy to get out of the habit of daily time with God in the Bible and in prayer. How do you fight against dropping the ball on your quiet time?
Don't forget about our service project for this wednesday. Should be a great night to serve others and represent Jesus to our community!
Hey guys, I'm at camp this week so that is why I haven't been able to post. And the funny thing is that most of the people that would respond are with me here!
Anyway, I hope you all are having a great week and I'm looking forward to getting home on Friday.
Remember the huge ball we used at The War? Well, it was a brand new ball, and after we used it that first night, it was losing air, and had ripped at one of the seams and two of the grommets had been pulled out. Yeah, we did some damage. Anyway, I emailed the company I got it from and they are sending us a new one because it was falling apart after 25 minutes of play!!! Sweet!
