Turn from your idols!

Great video on idolatry in American culture and especially the church.

I love this guy, what a great speaker! You can check out more of his podcasts through ITunes. His name is Mark Driscoll, he pastors a Mars Hill Church in Seattle.

All Consuming Consumerism

So i read an article about some students who decided to not buy anything brand new for a year. They wanted to remove themselves from the mindset of this culture... that is, we always are needing something new, we are rarely satisfied.

more than that, I believe that this has an awesome benefit for us as believers... where should our satisfaction lie? in Jesus...not in anything we can buy or things we can possess. should we be allow things and circumstances to dictate our "feelings" of satisfaction.

so here's a thought, or maybe a question... how can we begin to remove ourselves from the mindset of this culture? how can we take our consumeristic attitudes and change them into ones that are satisfied by only God?

Discouragement

How do you deal with discouragement? When something doesn't go the way you had hoped, or planned, how do you respond?

What does the Bible say about discouragement and frustration? Look to the story of Elijah when he runs from Jezebel after his victory at Mount Carmel.

Personally, discouragement and disappointment come after mountain-top experiences with God and other believers. I think this is what you find with Elijah too.

But again, I ask, how are we to handle these emotions?

Please, weigh in.

Thoughts on worship

I have been thinking about the church's concept of worship a lot lately. And I've gotten a little frustrated. There seems to be two predominant streams of thought when it comes to worship today... 1) what makes me feel good, and 2) what we've always done, a.k.a. tradition!
See, some people say that worship should be what makes me happy, or comfortable, or even entertained. Others say worship
should remain how we've always done worship. The problem with both of these lines of thinking is... it's not about God. Where does exalting God fit into what makes you feel good, or even connected? Where does praise and worship fit into our narrow view of tradition? Worship HAS to be centered around the person and character of God or it doesn't belong in church. If somehow worship becomes about our tastes, and what we feel comfortable with, than we have turned it into something other than what God intended.
Don't get me wrong, our expression of worship is going to be dramatically different depending on our culture and backgrounds, temperaments and personalities. We can not let these expressions become our definition for worship though.
In the two weeks we have following our series on worldview's, we will begin exploring the Biblical answer to today's "worship wars."
